"I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves." - Mary Shelley

The Middle Ages in Europe were some of the most precarious centuries in recorded history, bristling with war, excitement, and chaos. The Western Roman Empire had crumbled, territories were rapidly expanding, and heavy ploughs, hourglasses, spectacles, tidal mills, and more pioneering inventions were popping up across the continent. It was also a time of extreme prejudice, when women were treated as second-class citizens. Their only purpose in life was to procreate by the dozen. They were confined to their kitchens and barns at home. They could not vote, and most definitely were not allowed to be involved in anything with the word "office" in its title. What was worse, only a handful of these women would succeed in hauling themselves out of the trenches, as females were not allowed an education.

Given this context, there have always been stories about women who broke the mold somehow, and of all the mysterious stories passed down over the centuries and chronicled by history's storytellers, one of the most fascinating and hotly contested subjects is Pope Joan, a young woman who was so desperate to squeeze herself out of the status quo that she had done the unthinkable. For decades, she disguised herself as a man, living amongst her oppressors as she paved her way to the papal throne. She would keep up this pretense for more than two years until that one fateful day, when it all came unraveling.

Pope Joan The Indestructible Legend of the Catholic Church First and Only Female Pontiff (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Scott Clem Books

I enjoyed reading the e-book Pope Joan: The Indestructible Legend of the Catholic Church's First and Only Female Pontiff. The first quarter of the book discusses the history of the treatment of women from the beginning of recorded history through Pope Joan's time. The book covers the legend in detail from both the believers and the skeptics perspectives. Whether one believes are not, I believe you will enjoy reading about this legend. The book was concise and contained an excellent bibliography if one wants to read up on the legend.

Pope Joan The Indestructible Legend of the Catholic Church First and Only Female Pontiff (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Scott Clem Books Reviews

Pope Joan was supposedly known as Pope John VIII. She grew up in a time when women had no rights and we're generally uneducated. But Joan was a language prodigy, someone the Church could use as they spread their brand of religion to foreign lands.
The last part of the book explains why the first part is fiction.
You'll have to judge for yourself.
There are several books on Pope Joan and this is one if the best!
Lays both sides out in equal measure which I liked. Story line reads similar to a fairy tale which I was fond of including a child prodigy (Joan) gifted with languages, taught by a monk from a nearby monastery, a secret romance, an escape to Athens, a steady rise to prominence, the ultimate prize and then the unthinkable pregnancy. Book drops a lot of factoids at first supporting the legend (worth searching more of on the internet) including original author by name of Martin Polonus of Opava, the Benedictine Fulda Monastery where she might have temporarily resided, the pope she presumably replaced by name of Pope Leo IV, the cursed street no pope will look upon called Via Sacra lane and what about that sedia stercoraria? Latter part of the book goes on to debunk most everything that proceeds it leaving you the reader to decide what is what. In the end book left me wondering if it was all even really possible but still an interesting read and fun to think that maybe, just maybe something like this could have happened.
i was rather disappointed with this book. the majority of the book was an acceptable recounting of the story of pope joan but there was very little discussion either supporting or disproving whether or not she actually existed. it was also rather short, i read it in about an hour.
This is a fun look at the story about the long-held belief that there was once a female Pope in the Middle Ages. This not only tells the story but discusses the theories on all sides and why one belief is likelier than the other. Definitely worth reading.
